What Chi Sao Is And What It Is Not

I’ve seen countless Chi Sao videos, I’ve listened to all types of flame comments. I have drawn the conclusion that most folks, even some folks that train in Wing Chun haven’t the foggiest idea of the purpose of Chi Sao…

First let’s look at what Chi Sao does for a person. It teaches them sensitivity, energy control, sticking and helps them work on technique AND it bridges the cap between sparring and fighting…

What I see on many, not all Chi Sao videos is two people trying to beat each other up. Somewhere the true nature of Chi Sao Got lost. What you do see lot’s of times is one or two people just trying to beat the other person.

This kind of free flow chi sao defeats the purpose of doing chi sao. Chi Sao is an exercise that teaches skill sets. Obviously, the act of doing chi sao in of itself in no way represents a real fight, simply because in a real fight there is no initial contact with your opponent.

I’ve also seen videos where 1 person is trying to do Chi Sao while their opponent is trying to fight.  The comments I have read on many chi sao videos are full of ignorance. With the person doing the flaming not understanding what they are actually seeing.

…It takes a trained eye to really understand the dynamics of energy movement through the body.

You could easily mis interpret what is happening if you don’t know what to look for. I’ve seen plenty of good instructors get flamed because the person watching it doesn’t understand what is actually happening.

Any good Wing Chun practitionor knows that chi sao isn’t fighting. Hell you could hardly call it a spar session. Sparring has it’s place as does Chi Sao. The 2 exercises train 2 different components of a larger picture.

This is why when you see one person practicing chi sao while there partner is trying to fight the chi sao looks bad. Chi Sao isn’t about winning, it’s about blending with your opponent and feeling their energy.

One Final Thought…

In order to learn martial arts and get the most out of it. You need to be willing to leave your ego and pride at the door. If your already full of yourself and your ideas you won’t be able to learn new things.

It’s no secret that “style” is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is that you apply what you learn to who you are. It is in this way that you are able to bend and blend with your opponent.

I’ve studied with Sifu Phu for 18 years. It’s hard to understand how energy works, till you have had the opportunity to feel it for yourself.

Wing Chun Punch Power – Creating Power From Emptyness

Source: facebook.com via Larry on Pinterest

Interestingly many people mis – understand how Wing Chun get's it power. The easiest understanding of this is, Wing Chun's power comes from chi and speed.

Our ability to relax and release our energy creates massive amounts of power that is forcused sinks into our opponents.

People who have never experienced internal punches are always amazed at just how much they hurt.

Internal punches hurt long after the actual punch is delivered.

The one inch punch was first introduced and made famous by Bruce Lee during the 1960s. Since then, it has appeared in several mainstream hollywood films, most notably, Kill Bill.  You may recall when Uma Thurman's character tries to break out of her coffin when buried alive with nothing but her fist alone, after recollecting her religious training by her master, Pai Mai (played by Kung Fu master Gordon Liu) of punching a wall over and over again.  She was able to generate enough force from inside the coffin to break it open and set herself free….More at Wing Chun Taoist: One inch punch in Wing Chun

Wing Chun Punch Power | Don't Force It

I found in my own practice that trying to punch hard defeats ones ability to punch effectively. Your whole body needs to be relaxed when you release your wing chun punch.
