The Undying Art Of Wing Chun Kung Fu

Who would have thought that wing chun kung fu started from a woman who was forced to marry a warlord?

Yim Wing Chun was a woman being coerced into marriage. She sought guidance from a Shaolin Buddhist nun and was introduced into craft or art of self-defense.  This fighting art, just like any other art form, was passed from teacher to students verbally which is perhaps why finding or unearthing the history of Wing Chun was challenging.

Wing Chun, upon mastering the then nameless fighting style, fought the warlord she was forced to marry. She defeated the warlord and eventually, married a man she truly loved.  Because of this, the fighting style was named after Wing Chun. [Read more…]

Wing Chun Principle – Quickest Way Between Two Points Is…

March 4, 2011 By admin 1 Comment

Wing chun Principle – Of course The Answer Is A Straight Line

While there are many students who train in this style, many who claim that their way is the only true way. I like to believe that the Wing Chun Principle is more important than the actual linage. It has been these divisions in the martial arts that has caused valuable information to get lost.

For example: Many people seek out who taught Bruce Lee figuring that if they train with that sifu they will be as good as Bruce Lee. This is kinda of funny because the man (Bruce Lee) trained night and day every day  from what it looks like if you read any of his books.

While having a good instructor is very important, having good training habits and having a good attitude is even more important.

The only requirement that you should look for in a teacher is:

  • Are they more skilled than you?
  • Do they explain themselves so that you understand them?

Those are really the only 2 questions you should be concerned with.  This is why understanding a wing chun principle is more important than knowing who said what when. Even the great late Ip Man learned from someone else I am also sure he taught the system from his own unique  perspective.  Since Wing Chun is based on sensitivity training (chi sao) it can be said that like a fingerprint each persons wing chun is slightly different than the next persons.

Wing Chun Principle – The Best Defense Is No Be There!

What I particularly like about the  Wing Chun  martial art system is that, used correctly it takes your opponent by surprise and if you have a decent level of sensitivity skill you can really confuse the heck out of them.  Wing chun is one of the few systems that use principles to extract its knowledge from. We really aren’t talking about just 1 wing chun principle there are many different principles that make up the system. Each one up to individual interpretation. This is what gives wing chun so much diversity in the way it is done and taught. Ego, Arrogance and Ignorance  is what divides the world of wing chun.

Basic Wing Chun Sensitivity Drills

Wing Chun Sensitivity drills

Wing Chun Sensitivity Drills

Understanding  internal martial arts is to understand sensitivity drills.  Wing chun and other styles like it relies on a persons ability to feel energy.  I know to some folks it sounds strange but that is exactly what we do. We feel a persons intention through their body.

In many situations it appears that we can read a persons mind, but that isn’t true at all.  A lot of stories have been passed down throughout the centuries of feats of great martial artist of the past.

While there is some truth to the stories I am sure, many of the myths that have been spread comes from the fact that someone with an untrained eye watching a display of skill could easily misinterpret what is actually going on.

Wing Chun Sensitivity Drills –  Understanding Intention

The videos in this post are just one of many different sensitivity drills. It is important to understand that these drills are designed to teach a practitioner how to feel a persons intentions and deal with their energy.  Understanding how the body responds to different stimulus is essential to effectively counter attacking your opponent.

What is your intention?  There are really 2 types of attacks a person will use.

  • A False Attack
  • A Committed Attack

Both type of attacks have their place in combat, however like a finger print each type of attack  is unique and FEEL different.  Committed attacks are actually easier to counter than false attacks for obvious reason. If a person is committed to punching you in the face, you will know it because the energy will be driving right to the point of the  planned attack. Generally once a person makes the decision to attack, their body starts to  act on it.

Wing Chun Sensitivity Drills – Learning To Stick

The point of  wing chun sensitivity drills is to understand how your body should respond to a persons physical actions.  Once you learn how to read a persons intentions it becomes easier to defend against your opponents attacks as well as feel when it is right to attack.  All of this happens in a blink of a eye.

Which is about how long it takes for you to feel a persons intention, especially under live conditions. Wing Chun Sensitivity Drills have gotten a bad rap by lots of folks. That is because they don’t understand the purpose of them.

Sensitivity training is to prepare you for combat.  Training like Chi Sao isn’t fighting.  Rather it is a way to develop the skills you need to bridge the cap between training and fighting.

There was a time many many moons ago when martial arts wasn’t about competitions or ego for that matter. It was about self – preservation.  The need to survive is a ancient one. For the most part the world has forgotten how to feel energy,  its much easier today to just get a gun and shoot someone.

There isn’t a real need for swords or fighting skills in todays society. So the real skills of styles like wing chun have been forgotten, except for a handful of people around the world who treasure these lost arts.

Make no mistake, a person who is highly skilled can whip the pants off of someone who isn’t. I am not talking about sports, I am talking about pure survival where their are no rules, corners, tap outs etc….

Ultimately the person who can gain pressure control and control their own adrenaline is usually the person who wins.  Wing Chun sensitivity drills aids a person in understanding both.
