So I was recently scanning some websites when I came across a video of a very young child doing what looks like Chen Tai Chi. If I am wrong leave a comment and correct me. It goes to show you that age really isn’t a factor when it comes to learning a martial art.
Taijiquan Law of Neutrality and Self-discipline – Mini Culture
In the Tai Chi family table the neutralization of force and posture is elaborated very clearly. “Chen’s Elementary Chart of Postures of Chen Style Tai Chi” by Chen Xin says, “Yin and Yang are taken from might and Softness. …

The Mystery of why Yang Lu Chan, who reportedly defeated everyone in the Chen Village, didn’t promote his Tai Chi Chuan Master’s style but did promote his own style of Tai Chi Chuan remains to be solved and accepted by all. Simply put does Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan have superior qualities lacking in Chen? One of my Tai Chi Chuan Master’s, Coach Sunny Shu, a former Chinese Wu Shu Coach for the Shanghai National Wu Shu Team, who also placed second in a national Tai Chi Chuan tournament, taught me Chen style Tai Chi Chuan. She said there was a saying in China, “Even though Chen came before Yang, learn Yang before Chen”. After doing Tai Chi Chuan Yang and Chen for 39 years and using it to save my life during life and death combat in the streets of New York City, I find that Chen without the inner continuous slowness, outer softness and inner hardness of Yang style (not excluding during Fast Form Yang Tai Chuan) loses it true Tai Chi roots. The youth can become fascinated by the “fa ching” explosive strikes in Chen while neglecting the slow continuous soft parts of Chen that gives Chen it’s beautiful Yang balanced with Yin qualities which Yang Lu Chan learned. When I watch videos of much older Chen stylists I can cleary see the Yang balanced with the Yin. The Kids in the Vids look impressive but not as truly powerful as the elders I have on video. That will come with time. In real combat your Tai Chi Chuan whatever style must follow the Tao where Yin and Yang are equally balanced to be successful and maybe one day save your life. When I push with younger Chen stylists ( I am over 60yrs of age) they can’t grab me because they are simply not as soft as I am on the defense while they are easy to hit and grab or push because of their relative harder exterior. This is just my small experience in the vast world of martial arts and real combat.
