Personally I don’t much get involved with Internet debates when it comes to kung fu. The reason is simply because most times there isn’t a right answer or a wrong answer. The fact of the matter is that the right way to train your martial arts depends on who you are and what you are trying to accomplish in your training.
For example: If you are going to train to enter the ring and compete you need to train for that sport. If you are training yourself to defend yourself in a real life self defense situation the training needs to be tailored for that.
Just recently,
I My Kung Fu Brother (Sihing) was recently involved in a discussion about what part the wrist plays in your game as well as how it relates to your structure. The video we did was a video response to this video..
I like a lot of what they are saying. I also believe that structure isn’t as important as being able to adapt to your opponent. Sometimes people tend to over analyze their structure. In a real fight there isn’t time for that. You need to be able to adapt to the situation in the spur of the moment.
The difference I suppose in their philosophy compared to ours is we believe that you need to focus on wrist control the moment you start your training. Anyhow they seem like a great bunch of guys and I love how colorful our martial art community is.
Here was our response to their video…
At the end of the day. Both videos have lots of truth in them. What you as a student should do is take what makes sense for you and disregard what doesn’t. With that said, it’s important for you to do your part and experiment with these ideas and see how they work for you.
Kung fu is all about self expression. Bruce Lee was great at expressing himself via marital arts. I like to think those who sincerely seek the truth will find the truth. Anyhow I hope you enjoy these videos. I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject.
