Seems like everyday some new truth is coming out on what good martial arts is. Have we begun to become so arrogant to believe that 1,000 years ago they didn’t see the need to cross train in other styles of martial arts. We are a culture who feed off of t.v as our source for information. The media can paint any picture it likes and the masses unfortunately will buy into what the media tells them to.
While I enjoy good martial arts matches things like the UFC and other MMA outlets have made a circus out of something many of us have the utmost respect for.
Not to take away from what MMA is because there is a lot of good knowledge that has come from mixed martial artist fighters. It has made many people realize just how important cross training really is. Especially if you are preparing for the unknown.
But it seems like many people in the MMA camp mostly the youth, see mixed martial arts as the only way to win a fight. This has turned an idea and solidified it into law. When a person takes a martial art and makes it law it becomes stagnant it is at that point a person can no longer learn and their cup is now full.
Empty your cup and always stay in a continual state of learning , this is the best way to assure growth in your training.

Martial arts has always been a very diverse field. The fact is that it was first developed to quickly train people to fight on the battle field, then in many countries it was the way the people would learn to fight to defend themselves, against other people or ruling parties.
It is only in the 20th century that martial arts became a hobby, and then people started asking which is the best method. The best method is always the one that you know, and the one that wins you a fight.

I train mixed martial arts because I like to be able to dip into the various forms of martial arts and take the parts I like. Does that make me arrogant? Marital arts is not just about fighting, the spiritual/mental element is also very important to me.

I’ve trained in several different styles, but not at the same time. I toatlly agree with you on always learning. People that think they know it all are blocking themselves from further growth. I have seen this in a lot of MMA fighters. Lets hope that they will learn sooner than later. Love your blog. I will be back.
Cheers.

“Empty your cup” is probably the best martial arts quote (or life quote if you get deep into it) ever spoken. Spoken by the greatest martial artist and father of mixed martial arts – Bruce Lee.
If you treat every lesson like a child – knowing nothing before it – you will be able to truly learn.

I am sick of seeing all the make believe Dojo coming around with bad information crappy techniques and worthless Katas. Just because you are an old man with crazy eyebrows and a long white beard doesn’t give you the right to call yourself a “Grandmaster” that only makes you sound arrogant.

Do actually believe there are rules in martial arts. These arts are not fluffy tappy things. On the streets there are NO rules only survival. So when your “master” says no kicking below the belt do you actually believe that holds true on the street. If you stick your arm in my face I am going to remove a sizable chuck of skin for it.
