When it comes to martial arts there are no absolute rights or wrongs, rather there is just individual expression.
There is however a universal truth and that truth is that you must learn to master your mind, body and spirit to be a complete fighter/warrior. You can develop these attributes regardless of martial art path you take.
How To Know If You Are On The Wrong Martial Art Path
Here are some things for you to consider, it’s okay if some of these resonate with you. We are always in a constant state of growth. If you are sincere about learning, you will eventually come to understand the true nature of martial arts.
- Believing that one martial art is better than another martial art
- Believing fighting solves problems
- Believing that belt rank systems matters
- Thinking it’s important to earn a certificate
- Going from teacher to teacher and never staying consistent
- Thinking that because someone trained with teacher x they are better simply because who their teacher is
My friends, the best way to become a good martial artist is to absorb as much knowledge as you can everywhere you can. Always keep an open mind. Most importantly test all things.
There are many examples where more examples of where a person gets the wrong idea. For instance when it comes to sparring, some folks will tell you that unless you spar you will never learn how to fight.
The problem with that philosophy is that real fights really don’t resemble a sparring situation. While sparring teaches you critical skills if you’re not careful you could end up focusing on the wrong things which will in turn lead you down the wrong road to true clarity.

There are many families of martial arts around the world. All of them are unique in their own special way full of heritage and culture that spans hundreds and hundreds of years.
The bottom line is whatever martial art you are doing, do it because you love it. Do it without expectation and the mysteries and wonders of martial arts will reveal itself to you when you are ready.
