Have We Really Made Progress In The Martial Arts World?

Seems like everyday some new truth is coming out on what good martial arts is. Have we begun to become so arrogant to believe that 1,000 years ago they didn’t see the need to cross train in other styles of martial arts. We are a culture who feed off of t.v as our source for information.  The media can paint any picture it likes and the masses unfortunately will buy into what the media tells them to.

While I enjoy good martial arts matches things like the UFC and other MMA outlets have made a circus out of something many of us have the utmost respect for.

Not to take away from what MMA is  because there is a lot of good knowledge that has come from mixed martial artist fighters. It has made many people realize just how important cross training really is. Especially if you are preparing for the unknown.

But it seems like many people in the MMA camp mostly the youth, see mixed martial arts as the only way to win a fight. This has turned an idea and solidified it into law.  When a person takes a martial art and makes it law it becomes stagnant it is at that point a person can no longer learn and their cup is now full.

Empty your cup and always stay in a continual state of learning , this is the best way to assure growth in your training.

Reality Fighting – Whats The Real Deal?

June 16, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment

In today’s world of martial arts Reality Fighting is the big thing.  But what I can see reality fighting is nothing more than 2 dudes slugging it out.  While there are many arguments as to what is effective and what is not. I was always under the impression that if a 5’3 ft lady can’t use the system against a 6’5 man then the style is ineffective in real combat or self defense.

Real self defense has nothing to do with reality fighting, when you enter the ring or octagon you know your opponent you also are paired against someone of equal size and mass. What you end up seeing is to people doing all they can to just hurt each other.

A real fight is a matter of survival in many cases you may truly have to defend yourself from serious injury or even death. There are no rings , no corners, no coaches.

I respect all styles because I know its not the style that matters but the quality of a persons soul and the dedication to what they believe.  Ultimately each of us must seek our own truth.

Wing Chun’s Center Line Theory vs MMA Mindset

June 14, 2010 By admin 5 Comments

The big question is who’s center line are you fighting in yours or your opponents.  Some would say that you should always fight within your own center regardless of the situation. The problem is sometimes the fight is not in your center , in a fight an attack can come from any angle at anytime.

Today we know that MMA is the big sport. Many will tell you that MMA is the way to understand real fighting. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just like traditional martial artist will tell you that you have to do things this way or that way. Today’s mixed martial artist athlete will tell you that their way is the only “proven” way to fight.

They even have shows on t.v that talk about fighting science. What nobody mentions is the fact that the martial arts have been here for centuries. It is pretty  self centered to believe that  MMA is brand new. People have been using what works for centuries. It is only recently with the advent of media that people even know about martial arts in the mainstream.

The reality is this, there really is only one way of fighting, that is with our hands and feet.. Okay you can add elbows, biting and kneeing into the mix. But the truth is there really aren’t styles per say. There is just interpretations of how someone should handle themselves.

What does this have to do with Wing Chun’s Center Line theory? Just this, it doesn’t really matter because every single situation is different. Just like no 2 finger prints are the same, neither are 2 fights. If there is one thing I have learned from Wing Chun it is that we must flow with the energy given, this means sometimes abandoning the center line in favor of dealing with the energy where it is at.

Wing chun and MMA share one thing in common.  They both where created to hurt another human being. In the end its not the style that tells the story, it is the heart of the person that does.
