Have you ever heard of internal martial arts? Many people think that martial arts are all about punches, kicks, and throws. However, there is a deeper level of martial arts that focuses on the internal aspects of the body, rather than just the external movements. Internal martial arts involve a combination of physical movements, breathing techniques, and mental focus. But, is this type of martial art real, or is it just a myth? Let’s dive into the world of internal martial arts and unmask the truth behind it.

Unveiling The Truth: Internal Martial Arts

Internal martial arts, also known as Neijia, is a traditional Chinese martial art that focuses on the mind-body connection. The aim of this martial art is to cultivate and harness the power of Qi (pronounced Chee), which is the life force energy that flows through our bodies. Internal martial arts utilize slow, controlled movements that require balance, coordination, and proper breathing techniques, along with mental focus and concentration. Practitioners of internal martial arts believe that by harnessing the power of Qi, they can improve their physical wellbeing and mental clarity.

The Mystery Behind Internal Martial Arts

Internal martial arts can be viewed as a mystery because it involves a lot of symbolism and deep philosophical concepts. When watching a skilled internal martial arts practitioner, it may appear as if they are barely moving, yet their movements are incredibly powerful. Much of the practice involves developing the ability to control the flow of Qi and use it to execute movements with power and efficiency. Additionally, many internal martial arts have a strong emphasis on Taoist philosophy, which includes concepts such as Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, and the Tao, all of which add to the mystery of this martial art.

The Hardest Thing To Overcome When Doing Internal Martial Arts

April 20, 2016 By admin Leave a Comment

The first Kung Fu style I learned was Wing Chun, it was explained to me that the system is an external/internal system of martial arts. To be honest with you I didn’t even know what that really meant.

I always figured well a block is a block and a punch is a punch etc…

While that is true, what I have discovered in my own journey is the main difference between Internal martial arts and external martial arts is simply. One looks for answers from within while the other looks for answers on the outside.

The reason why I decided to study internal martial arts is because I realized one day I would grow old and weak. All of us are running uphill and sadly the hill just keeps getting steeper. The only thing we can do is learn how to use our bodies as efficiently as we can because as time goes on we all get weaker.

Master: Even when you think you are being soft, you are not. Student: But why? Master: Because you are already thinking too hard… ~Sifu Larry Rivera Can you relate? While time doesn’t stop we can slow things down. The best way in my opinion is through learning things like Tai Chi or any of the other internal martial art styles.

At the end of the day internal and external martial arts teaches you how to defend yourself. However only internal martial arts teaches you how to live.

Internal Vs External Saga…

There are two types main schools of thought when it comes to Kung Fu. Internal Martial Arts and External Martial Martial Arts.  Internal Martial Arts is characterized by soft flowing movements while external martial arts has hard movements. In reality you can find both internal and external traits in most martial art systems.

The combination complements each other and a person who studies both aspects is a more powerful practitioner. The Yin and Yang symbol or hard and soft illustrates the balance that each has for the other.

A good kung fu student strives to find balance in their life it is through balance that they are able to see what they are trying to achieve in their art and life more clearly.
