The single most important aspect of kung fu training is the ability to breath properly. All of your emotions is controlled by your breath.  As martial artist we focus on memorizing forms, sparring, lifting weights etc..

We often neglect our breath, even though it is the most important aspect of all your training.  Proper breathing can help you avoid having an adrenaline dump. For those of you that have experienced loosing control of your adrenaline, you know that it can be a painful lesson.

Self Defense – What Is Real Fighting Anyways?

Self  Defense – Why are you fighting?

self defense

One thing I have noticed especially at sites like YouTube is you see people randomly fighting without any real cause other than to fight.  To be honest with you fighting never solves anything.

The reason is because in the end if you really want to prove a point you could simply shoot someone and end the discussion right there.  Of course that is a tad bit extreme but my point is that fighting never really solves anything. You just end up looking like an smuck who has a big mouth.

Self Defense – Predator Vs Prey

True self defense is only needed when a fight can not be avoided. I recommend avoiding a fight at all cost. You never know when someone is going to be waiting to get revenge for embarrassing them.

Or worse you could run into someone who doesn’t realize they aren’t going to win the fight and will continue to fight even after they lost the fight.

Real self defense works really well if you are truly innocent and are just minding your own business.  The reason is because the person doing the attacking is only focused on 1 thing and that is hurting you. Since there mind is pre-occupied in this thought it can be very easy for you to employ effective counter measures.

In Wing Chun there is a saying ” Our style isn’t flashy, matter of fact if done right it doesn’t look like anything at all” .

Good Self Defense Takes Seconds Not Minutes

Unlike sport fighting that we see on t.v there are no rounds or rules for that matter. In a real fight chances are the person doesn’t know your background or what you actually may or may not know.

This leaves a big unknown factor in a real fight.  It is best to stay calm in a fight situation and allow your opponent to reveal their intentions so that you can counter.

Timing is everything in a fight, knowing when to attack can mean the difference between victory or defeat in a self defense situation.

In this video is a clear demonstration of a person staying calm and counter attacking at the right moment.

Once you sting your opponent there is a good chance you will knock some sense into them.

If you notice the actual fighting part of this video only lasted a few seconds.

That my friends is real self defense. I would of slapped the guy in the face as soon as he spread his arms apart. Some people are just stupid.

Meaningful Kung Fu Training

Kung Fu Training With A Wooden Dummy

Image via Wikipedia

One of the key factors to actually getting better at your Kung Fu is to focus on your training.  The truth of the matter is most martial art schools teach public classes. While I see a need to be able to work with other people sometimes a person believes that just by going to a public class 3 times a week that it is enough kung fu training for skill to increase.

The reality of the matter is it takes hours upon hours of dedicated training to really achieve results. This is where a Wooden Dummy could be really helpful.  Besides the really cool sound they make when you hit them, they can help hone your techniques and clean up your structure. (Of course as the saying goes wood don’t hit back!)

Kung fu Training With A Partner

It is best to have a training partner this will help keep you accountable for your actions. If you ask me if you want to get good fast do it this way.

  • Learn from someone better than you
  • Train with someone as good as you
  • Teach someone not as good as you

Add some real resistance training and you are golden.  I am a big fan of private lessons or semi-private lessons with a few public classes. Good Kung Fu training is all about dedication, commitment, perseverance, sacrifice I think you get the point. If its something you love to do, find a way to do it.

Kung Fu Training Exercises

There is this whole yin and yang hard and soft thing going on in most kung fu styles. For this article I am not going to dig to deep here with all the philosophical stuff. Rather I am going to focus on the general idea.

More on the Wing Chun Wooden Dummy

Anything in extreme is a bad thing, remember that your workout is for your martial arts training, always keep that in mind. Balance is the key to successful kung fu training.
