Meaningful Kung Fu Training

Kung Fu Training With A Wooden Dummy

One of the key factors to actually getting better at your Kung Fu is to focus on your training.  The truth of the matter is most martial art schools teach public classes. While I see a need to be able to work with other people sometimes a person believes that just by going to a public class 3 times a week that it is enough kung fu training for skill to increase.

The reality of the matter is it takes hours upon hours of dedicated training to really achieve results. This is where a Wooden Dummy could be really helpful.  Besides the really cool sound they make when you hit them, they can help hone your techniques and clean up your structure. (Of course as the saying goes wood don’t hit back!)

Kung fu Training With A Partner

It is best to have a training partner this will help keep you accountable for your actions. If you ask me if you want to get good fast do it this way.

  • Learn from someone better than you
  • Train with someone as good as you
  • Teach someone not as good as you

Add some real resistance training and you are golden.  I am a big fan of private lessons or semi-private lessons with a few public classes. Good Kung Fu training is all about dedication, commitment, perseverance, sacrifice I think you get the point. If its something you love to do, find a way to do it.

Kung Fu Training Exercises

There is this whole yin and yang hard and soft thing going on in most kung fu styles. For this article I am not going to dig to deep here with all the philosophical stuff. Rather I am going to focus on the general idea.

More on the Wing Chun Wooden Dummy

Anything in extreme is a bad thing, remember that your workout is for your martial arts training, always keep that in mind. Balance is the key to successful kung fu training.

Fuk Sao Used In Wing Chun

August 5, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment

The Fuk Sao is a very effective weapon in the Wing Chun arsenal.  It is a great defensive and offensive weapon. You wanna keep your elbows down when using a fuk , if they should lift up it will weaken your structure.

Is There A Point To Kung Fu Belts?

June 23, 2010 By admin 1 Comment

A person can get a black belt in about 2 to 3 years. When I first started training I asked my Sifu if he had a belt rank system.  His reply was yes, but he doesn’t use it. I must admit at first I was a little disappointed. I was really looking to reach that goal.

But none the less I liked the guy so I continued to train with him. As the years went on 5 years, then 10 years etc.. I started to realize that having a belt system gives a person a false sense of security. Don’t get me wrong there are some schools out their that really drill their black belts and they work hard for their accomplishments.  But there are so many schools out their that really do water down their martial arts.

It is rather easy to get a black belt in some schools. This gives the student a false sense of security. This is one of the reasons why you hear stories of black belts walking into bars and getting their butts handed to them.

Truth can’t be found in a belt, while I really wanted a  Kung Fu Belt I am glad that my Sifu never focused on it. People ask me all the time what belt am I? I sorta laugh because I have been training most of my life and I don’t have a belt. I don’t even have a certificate of completion.

My take on this whole belt thing is this.

If you are going to train in a martial art kung fu or any other martial art system, don’t worry so much about the belts. That implies that one day you will have gotten to the finish line which means you have learned all you can.  In Kung Fu we know that there is always someone better. We are on a life long journey of self discovery. There isn’t a finish line there is only continual growth.

So while I can understand why some people would want  a Kung Fu Belt, the reality is the belt means nothing. What matters most is the spirit of a person.
